Sparkle Flowers || Canon40D/EF100 Macro | 1/400s | f2.8 | ISO100 | Tripod
Another image from the Frelinghuysen Arboretum in New Jersey. I used off camera flash with a snoot to provide the narrow beam of light down the middle of the photo, I like how it made the flowers sparkle.

Visitor || Canon40D/EF100 Macro | 1/400s | f2.8 | ISO100 | Handheld
This was one of the images that I submitted in the assigned category "Out of Place" in the competition this month. And I confess, this was not really a picture I loved, but it was the only one I could find that fit in the assigned category. This one was I took this one in New Jersey at the winery last fall. This critter was hidden back under some leaves, and so I used off camera flash to try and brighten it up, unfortunately because of the angle it looks like on camera flash (which I don't care for). It was pretty hard to get the right shot since he moved around a lot.

Night Crawler || Canon40D/EF100 Macro | 1/250s | f8 | ISO400 | Handheld
Another submission for competition that didn't place. But this was a very interesting spider. One night at my parent's house, we found this spider out in the front that put up a huge web. My dad and I took some pictures, trying to figure out how close I could get and trying different flash angles, it was a fun experiment. The next morning I went out to take pictures of the spider with some early morning light and it was gone, web and all. Oh well.

Duke Farms Light Painting

Light Painting || Canon 40D/Tokina12-24@14 | 30s | f8 | ISO100 | Tripod

This is from my trip to New Jersey. One of our stops was at Duke Farms. We were told that we were going to go walk the grounds at sunset and do some photography at the old hay barn . In my mind I was picturing an old wooden barn, this was nothing of the sort. The ruins were the stone remaining from the fire, and is now used to house several marble statues. We stayed quite late, experimenting with light painting. This one was done using a flashlight, a red gel, and a blue gel. For those unaware of what light painting is, the idea is to leave the exposure open for a long time, and then paint with various lights what you'd like to show up in the photograph. So in this case, this is a white marble statue, painted with red and blue light.

Wolf Cub on a rainy day || Canon EOS 40D/EF70-200mm f/4L USM | 1/400 | f/4 | ISO 1600 | Handheld
The weather was pretty miserable here, I had my camera wrapped in a shower cap with rubber bands holding it to the edge of the lens, hoping that they really had made the 40D to handle wet weather. Every time I look at this image, it takes me to that point in time, feeling wet, cold, and I imagine this wolf cub had a similar thought "Why am I out here, I should be trying to find cover!". Shot at the Lakota Wolf Preserver in New Jersey.

Sunning Bumblebee

Sunning Bumblebee || Canon40D/EF100mm Macro | 1/400s | f5.6 | ISO100 | Handheld

This is another one from my trip to New Jersey. Our final day we visited the Frelinghuysen Arboretum and the sun was out in full force. I did manage to get a few shots I was pleased with, this was one of them.  This bumblebee really was huge (about the size of a quarter), I followed him for a while, then had to wait for the flower to stop moving (from his landing).

Wolf Cub || Canon EOS 40D/EF70-200mm f/4L USM | 1/200 | f/4 | ISO 1600 | Handheld
(Sorry for the lack of postings lately, just got back from a great vacation in Florida.) This is another shot from my trip to New Jersey, at the Lakota Wolf Preserve. We had a rather sizeable rain storm come through while we were there, and this one was taken in the middle of the day with a very dark rain cloud still over head. The rain had let up to a light drizzle, and so I left the cover of the bus to go take some more photographs. This is one of their wolf cubs, and while the image is dark, it was dark, so I think it represents the mood and feeling. I was rather pleased with my camera's handling of the high ISO, since my 10D didn't do nearly as well.

Bolt || Canon EOS 40D/EF100mm f/2.8 Macro USM | 1/250 | f/2.8 | ISO 100 | Handheld
Part of my trip to New Jersey included a trip to a winery, this huge cask was out front.  I like the texture that came out and the way the macro lens provided a nice narrow depth of field. I also used off camera flash (580EXII with ST-E2) with a snoot (http://www.lumiquest.com/lq891.htm) to provide the beam of light across the bolt.

Wolf Looking || Canon EOS 40D/EF70-200mm f/4L USM | 1/250 | f/4 | ISO 400 | Handheld
I had a great opportunity to go to New Jersey on a Popular Photography Mentor Series tour in August.  One of our stops was the Lakota Wolf Preserve.  They had many incredible animals, and the fences had little cutouts for cameras.  I caught this one looking straight at me, and I wonder what he was thinking... It was very dark and cloudy, and moments after this it stormed.
